What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks, or “striae,” appear after our skin is stretched abruptly. When your skin stretches, collagen and elastin fibers rupture. In response, your body rapidly heals itself, causing these red or white marks to appear. Weight gain and pregnancy are the most common causes of stretching.
What Are the Signs?
Typically, stretch marks start off as purple or pink stripe-like lines in areas of rapid size change (such as the abdomen during pregnancy). Over time, these marks gradually fade to white but rarely disappear completely. Striae are scars on the body and are permanent without intervention. They can be slightly indented and noticeable when touched.
